HERNANDEZ CISNEROS, Freddie; MENA LIMA, Andrea M; RIVERO SANCHEZ, Miguel y SERRANO GONZALEZ, Aldo. Hipertensión arterial: comportamiento de su prevalencia y de algunos factores de riesgo. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 1996, vol.12, n.2, pp. 145-149. ISSN 1561-3038.
A case-control study was carried out with the aim of knowing the behaviour of prevalence and of some risk factors of arterial hypertension at a consultation of the family physician, belonging to the "Ignacio Agramonte" Community Teaching Polyclinic. The case group was composed of 150 patients dispensarized with the diagnosis of arterial hypertension, and the control group had the same number of subjects, who did not suffer from this disease and received medical attention at the same consultation. All of them took part in a survey where a series of selected variables were collected for the computerized processing of data. The most important results attained were as follows: a prevalence highly over other studies carried out in the country, with a greater frequency in men over 35 years old, and with brown and black skin. The three risk factors showing the highest degree of association were: family pathological history of arterial hypertension, obesity, and salt consumption abuse.
