A prospective and descriptive study of 261 alcohol consumers who were attended at a family physician's office of the area of the "Bayamo Oeste" Teaching Polyclinic, in Granma province, was conducted from January lst to December 31st, 1995. To determine the type of consumption of each of them and to define the proportion of alcoholics in the population, a screening was carried out in that physician's office. The results were the following: most of the persons who drank alcoholic beverages were between 15 and 44 years old. A high percentage of them (both, men and women) were married. The ingestion of alcohol began at very early ages in more than two third of the cases. 44,5 % started to drink between the age of 16 and 20, 35,6 % between 21 and 25 years old, and 7,3 % between the age of 10 and 15. Social consumption prevailed in the applied questionnaires; however, it was found that the consumers at risk were 43,3 % in the diagnostic identifications questionnaire (DIQ) and 44,1 % in the CAGE. The harmful consumption was 9,6 % in the DIQ and 9,2 % in the CAGE. The alcohol dependance was 0,4 % in the DIQ and 0,8 % in the CAGE. Most of the moderate drinkers were 16-24 years old, whereas those corresponding to harmful consumption were 25-42

Palabras clave : ALCOHOLISM [epidemiology]; QUESTIONNAIRES; RISK FACTORS.
