A descriptive study was conducted aimed at identifying the causes of the low participation of men in the family planning (FP) consultation. The sample was composed of 300 men, 100 that accompanied their partners to the consultation and 200 that were randomly selected. A questionnaire with 16 questions was applied and it was found that only 3.6 % participated in the family planning consultation and that 63.6 % went just as companions. The condom was the most used contraceptive method according to the sample (47.3 %). Its use prevailed among young men aged 20-24 (59.5 %). 48.6 % men had fair knowledge about family planning, whereas 1 out of 4 had poor knowledge. It was observed a defficient communication between partners (64 %). It was concluded that men do not go to the consultation frequently due to their little motivation, to the lack of knowledge on aspects related to family planning and to a defficient communication with their partners
