A descriptive study was conducted among 81 patients over 35 from the rural area of Santa Ana-Jesús María, in the municipality of Limonar, that were classified by risk factors, such as alcoholism and smoking, from January, 1998, to January, 1999, in order to identify the impact of the application of the national program for oral cancer screening on a rural area. These patients underwent a physical examination of the buccal cavity and the neck, and the following data were registered in their medical histories: age, sex, toxic and dietetic habits, use of prosthesis and visits to the specialist. The prevalence of premalignant and malignant lesions was of 13.5 % and they predominated in the male elderly. Smoking was identified as the most important risk factor. The most frequent premalignant lesion was leucoplasia, whereas the commonest malignant lesion was epidermoid carcinoma. The progress of the program was considered as unsatisfactory and it was recommended an increase of the screening of such lesions by the family physician and the supervision of the program by the basic working group.
