Summary A descriptive study was conducted with 101 children that were born in 1998 to determine the relation of some epidemiological variables with the type of breast feeding they receive up to the first year of life in the health area of San Cristóbal. The variables were determined by interviewing their mothers a year after delivery. It was proved that the practice of exclusive and complemented breast feeding is low. The deviations in the nutritional state were related to the significant abandonment of breast feeding. The acute upper respiratory infection (AURI) was the most common entity among infants. It was observed even when the child recieved exclusive breast feeding. Hypogalactia or agalactia were the main causes of weaning. 32.6 % of the mothers said that they had not been informed about the topic and, among those who had, they referred to the family physician’s office as the place of highest participation.
