A descriptive and cross-sectional research was made among 131 families from the family physician's office 272 corresponding to "Turcios Lima" Polyclinic, in 1998, aimed at analyzing some their characteristics. Data were obtained by reviewing the family medical histories. The percentage method and the Chi square test were used for the statistical analysis with 95 % of reliability. The nuclear families proved to be the most frequent with 60.3 % and the extension phase predominated in the vital cycle with 48.1 %. The transitory crises appeared in 70 families and the non-transitory in 24 households. No relation was found between the crises and the family structure.
