A case control-type analytical study was made to determine the risk factors associated to the occurrence of degenerative dementia in old patients living in the people´s council "Los Maceo", whose population is taken care of by "Carlos J. Finlay" teaching polyclinics in Santiago de Cuba City. The sample was made up of 22 cases previously diagnosed as degenerative dements by the Multidisciplinary Gerontology Team and 66 controls. A survey was administered and the results achieved were analyzed. Odd ratios of each variable were estimated. Low educational level (OR=3,99) and the pathological family history of dementia (OR = 3.01) were identified as risk factors. No causal relation was observed among sex, intensive changes in emotional state and sudden repetitive change of the living environment (0R=1). The exercising of intellectual abilities after 60 years of age was considered to be a protective factor.
