A longitudinal, retrospective and descriptive research was performed, reviewing diagnostic US remissions to our service from October 2004 to May 2005, and variables to be controlled in a database created before analysis were differentiated, in which it was possible to identify main errors by health professionals at moment of create it. We noted that in most of them required clinical data weren't present by means of physical examination and a careful interrogation to help US physician al moment of make a better diagnosis, and thus may use of a rational way US equipments, achieving a long term application. Main mistakes founded were: lack of physical examination in 1 138 remissions for a 61.9 %, and also lack of diagnostic impression in 1 339 prescriptions for a 72.89 %. Also, there is a high degree of negative examinations performed (908) for a 49.42 %, which is almost half of the sample, evidencing possibility that appropriate criteria and signs weren't to be account to prescribe this complementary method. Only there was a coincidence of diagnostic impressions in case of ultrasonographic findings. Female sex had the more high frequency of this service for a 85.13 % in aged 35. More demanded type of US was the gynecologic one, for al total of 1 085 cases representing 59.06 %.
