A cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study was conducted including 1 055 subjects from all municipalities of Ciudad de La Habana as well as head municipalities of remainder country provinces, to characterize the drugs consumption practices of adult population and to identify how this population receives information on drugs and its opinion regarding the quality of this type of information. More than a half of person polled consume drugs; the drug average by consumer was of 2,16 and the more used pharmacological groups were: antihypertensive, non-steroid anti-inflammatory and the psycho-drugs. The 7,3% of subjects included in this study to consume drugs without medical prescription, the 78% of population polled use self-medication due to headache, the 65,2% due to flu-like state, while the 56% to resort to this practice due to presence of fever. Likewise, the 68,8% stays to receive information on drugs mainly by TV, the physician and the leaflets. According to the patient criterion, information obtained may be classified as good in most of the cases. We conclude that a high ratio of polled persons consume drugs, and self-medication is placed among the more frequent behaviors in face to disease despite the information, qualified as good in relation to drugs.
