Resumen

Introduction : importance given to the professional burnout as a work-related psychosocial risk affecting the physician's health is a growing concern as well as the consequences for mental and physical health, quality of life and efficiency of these professionals. It has also been said that positive resources of personality such as self-esteem may have a modulating effect on the occurrence of professional burnout. Objective : to identify the presence of professional burnout and its relationship with self-esteem in general integral medicine specialists. Method : a descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted from January to June 2012. A sample of 85 general integral physicians was selected in Plaza de la Revolution municipality. Cooper-Smith's brief burnout and self-esteem questionnaire (version for the adults) was used. Results : the application of statistical instruments and tests allowed detecting the professional burnout in the studied specialists as well as the relationship of this construct with the self-esteem of professionals. Conclusions: it was confirmed that professional burnout is much present in the studied specialists. The low and mean self-esteem levels were related to professional burnout and emotional fatigue, which means that this quality of the human personality may modulate the occurrence of the burnout syndrome and its repercussion.
