With the support of the Alma Ata Statement of 1978, the health sciences faculties, universities, national and international medical education organizations have proclaimed that the primary health care setting should gain increasing significance in the formation of health professionals, whereas the involvement of the hospital as main setting in the curricula should be gradually reduced. The student should be trained in comprehensive medicine, health promotion, prevention, recovery and rehabilitation rather than in curative medicine exclusively; additionally, the family medicine discipline should be promoted in the medical curricula. A qualitative study was conducted to compare the level of utilization of primary health care settings and the comprehensive general medicine programs in Cuba within the upgraded curriculum of the medical career in 2010 derived from the medical program implemented since 1985. The results of the research study performed by the author in 1994 at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana and of the upgraded medical curriculum in 2010 were considered. The agreement and difference analysis of the collected information was made.
