Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is an increasing health problem in which the periodontal disease is considered the sixth complication in dentistry and at the same time a risk factor for periodontitis. Objective: To describe the periodontal disease in diabetic patients over 30 years old in Zaza del Medio, Taguasco in the period 2008-2010. Methodology: A transversal, descriptive and observational study was carried out from April 2008-2010 with a sample of 52 patients. The variables taken into account were age, sex, diabetes, periodontal condition, time of evolution, and diabetic treatment. A periodontal rate treatment was used to determine the periodontal health condition. The observation method and the data collecting model were used and results were presented in frequency distribution tables. Results: the most representative group was the one between 50-59 years and women as well. Diabetes type II was more common with a predominance of severe gingivitis in patients with less than 10 years of evolution. Conclusion: gingivitis was the predominant periodontal affection.
