Resumen

A bibliographical revision was carried out with the objective of exposing humanity's historical values such as social phenomenon, interactions and struggle in the knowledge of odontological and surgical aspects, related to the socioeconomic and cultural elements that characterized every period in the history of this profession. This principle reveals advances and setbacks that reflect social life. The medical care of the dominant class was the only one guaranteed during slavery. In feudalism dental and surgical activities were separated from the medical ones because of the rejection that existed towards blood and manual labor, which brought about the appearance of barbers. Until the end of this period, the fundamental base of knowledge was empiricism with a great influence of religion. In the modern era the scientific stage of dentistry is developed, and the first dental school arises; being consolidated Maxilofacial Surgery as a specialty
