This article shows how to deal with the principle of the consideration of the students' mother tongue in the foreign language teaching-learning process that takes place in countries where the target language is not the mother tongue of the learners. This is precisely the case of the teaching-learning process of English in Cuban educational system. Some experiences and useful suggestions about how to deal with that principle in the teaching-learning process of foreign languages in order to contribute to the achievement of that objective.
