Nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) were assessed, specially the number of particles by nucleus in melanocytic nevus (MN) and malignant melanomas , and their correlation with prognostic factors and survival rate. Twenty-nine cases of malignant melanoma in vertically growth phase (MMVGPh) , 30 melanocytic nevus (20 intradermal and 10 compound) and 30 healthy skin biopsies were studied. It was found that in normal fact and in MN the number of AgNORs particles per cell was 1,22 ± 0,41 and 1,35 ± 0,54 respectively and that AgNORs were well-defined, small and independent whereas AGNORs per nucleus in MMVGPh showed 8,02 ± 5,31 and were poorly-defined, bigger and tending to converging. The number of AgNORs in MMVGPh greatly depends on thickness (Breslow) and number of mitoses but is not associated with the infiltrating level clark of a tumor. The number of AgNORs was correlated with theoretical survival rate but not with the real survival rate. These results suggest that the number and morphology of AgNORs are specially a clear indication which is of interest as a prognostic factor in MMVGPh and also a rapid, cheap and accessible technique; therefore, it should be incorporated to the oncologic routine procedure of malignant melanoma
