FERBEYRE BINELFA, Luis; CRUZ GONZALEZ, Pablo; CUEVAS VELIZ, Iván y VAZQUEZ CIMADEVILLA, José M.. Quemodectomas de la región cervicofacial. Rev cubana med [online]. 2003, vol.42, n.1, pp. 46-51. ISSN 1561-302X.
Chemodectomas are unusual tumors that arised from paraganglion tissues. They are usually bening and present a great vascular component in its structure. A total of 28 cases of cervicofacial localization were seen at the National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology from 1980 to 1998. Only 17 of them fulfilled the requirements for their statistical analysis. Surgery was the initial elective treatment in 9 cases. A patient received combined therapeutics, whereas 2 cases had no treatment. The local control was possible in 10 of the 15 cases treated with an average follow-up of 6.2 years. Surgery was able to control all the tumors of the carotid sinus but with a high morbidity and a postoperative death. Generally, this series may be compared with the reviewed literature; however, more cases are necessary to obtain significant statistical results.
