From 2000 the number of pregnant women living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has arisen in Cuba. The follow up of this patients has been centralized in some hospitals around the country and in the “Pedro Kourí” Tropical Medicine Institute, in Havana. Despite this, Cuban doctors can meet HIV positive pregnant patients in other hospitals and countries. The aim of this article is to provide an update of this topic to Cuban obstetricians and general doctors. This review will focus on the current knowledge available regarding the management of these patients and to show the main strategies for the prevention of the mother to child transmission of VIH.
