This study was aimed at exploring some of the perceived consequences of hysterectomy in thirty eight hysterectomized women from a primary care health center were interviewed, and were asked to respond the SCL-90 R inventory of symptoms and the IFSF scale of sexual functions. All participating women reported symptomatic suffering, especially, feelings of sadness associated with physical symptoms of abatement and pain in arms and legs, lasting up to a year following surgery. An inverse correlation between the level of satisfaction with the information received from the health team and the level of perceived symptoms. All women in the study manifested feeling low levels of sexual desire and sexual satisfaction. Finally, both, protective and risk factors derived from the experiences of participants were grouped in four categories, in relation to the meanings the uterus and hysterectomy had for them.
