Diagnosis is vital to differentiate its three presentation modes: minor, major and herpetiform aphthae. Painful ulcers are oral manifestations of systemic diseases. In this literature review, information was sought in the main global databases, especially in PubMed and ScieLO with the descriptors recurrent aphthous stomatitis in English and Spanish each. Most recent articles which emphasis on diagnosis, symptoms and etiopathogenesis were chosen. These aspects are the basis for diagnosis and accurate treatments by doctors and stomatologists.
