Introduction:

the total toothless elderly patients with large bone atrophies, have affected functions such as chewing, phonation, swallowing and their psyche which affect the quality of life; but for these patients, there is an alternative treatment: oral implantology.

Objective:

to determine the impact of implant-supported total prosthesis treatment in the quality of life of elderly patients.

Method:

a cross-sectional investigation was carried out in the implantology office of the Faculty of Stomatology at the University of Medical Sciences in Havana, Cuba, during the period from January 2015 to February 2016. The universe was represented by 41 patients (men, 53.7%), who after two months of rehabilitation, completed the questionnaire about quality of life related to oral health (OHIP-14).

Results:

age between 60 and 74 years old, represented 80.5% , and between 75 and 90 years old, 19.5%. The dimensions with the highest negative impact were physical pain with 48.8%, physical disability with 51.2%, and psychological distress with 73.2%. The dimensions with the lowest negative impact (no impact) were functional limitation, psychological disability, social disability and disability with 95.1%, 92.7%, 97.6% and 100%, respectively.

Conclusions:

the implant-supported total prosthesis treatment improves the quality of life of elderly patients.
