Introduction: the teaching staff of History subject in universities requires a special training because of the contribution of this subject to the future medical professionals. Objective: to support the design of a methodological strategy that guaranties the training of professors to teach History subject in higher education contexts. Material and method: qualitative research towards the training of History subject professors in Medical Studies at the Medical University in Pinar del Rio, which was supported on materialist-dialectic methods using historic-logical and systemic approaches. A survey was applied together with an observation guide to lectures. Descriptive statistics was used with the criterion of experts. Results: 37,9% (11) of the teaching staff recognized their difficulties in learning the Didactics of History subject; 47,3% (12) participated in specialized courses, 6,8% (2) passed higher postgraduate courses. The 47,3% (12) were acquainted with the importance of knowing the professional model, corresponding to 20,6% (6), who learned the elements that are part of such process. Conclusions: the methodological strategy used guaranties the actions to its development, where the system of the methodological work together with the planning of a training course constituted the essential procedures that responded to the methodological preparation of the History teaching staff in universities and at the same to teach the subject towards the achievement of a professional model.
