Introduction: the analysis of the process of citizen formation period proofs the progressive increase in the international and national context regarding the university commitment to the development of professional ways of performance, spreading it beyond professional practice and making impact on the social process of transformation. Objective: to systematize from the theoretical point of view, and following the trends with the empirical processes of citizen formation of the medical students in the international and national contexts. Material and method: supported on dialectical-materialistic method. Theoretical: historical-logical, systemic-structural and documentary review. Empirical: surveys, interviews and participative observation with descriptive statistics. Results: trends and perspectives of higher medical education in the international and national contexts were systematized. No definitions of contents were observed to the citizen formation period along with its impact in the curricular Cuban conception of the medical studies. Lack of methods to develop a new notion of the implementation of citizen professional ways of performance was confirmed. The regularities of the citizen formation process for the medical students were as well determined. Conclusions: the process of citizen formation period for the medical students at the Medical University in Pinar del Rio showed deficiencies, since it is spontaneous, empirical and requires of values to solve problems of the medical profession, limiting the possibilities to contribute to the comprehensive development of the professional performance, which influence on the inefficiency to transform the ways of performing on the medical practice into the social context.
