Background: hypertension is a chronic disease, it is one of the health problems in the world that most affects the man, so it is important to diagnose the risk factors relating to the disease. Objective: to determine the behavior of some cardiovascular risk factors in adolescents with essential hypertension. Methodology: a cross-sectional study was made on a sample of 90 adolescents with essential hypertension, of both sexes, aged between 12 and 18. Patients were treated at the outpatient pediatric cardiology at the Provincial Pediatric Hospital in Sancti Spíritus, from January to December 2012. The variables used were: age, sex, race, family history of hypertension, cardiovascular risk factors in family, body mass index and examinations. Results: the group of 12-14 years (58%), male sex and white patients (62%) predominated. Regarding family history, hypertension (98%) appears as the most frequent cardiovascular risk factor. Conclusions: hypertension was found in adolescents with risk factors.
