Introduction:
chronic non-communicable diseases constitute a health problem for elder people, to be considered in patients requiring to ophthalmological surgery.
Objective:
to identify the prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases in patients requiring eye surgery attended at the Algeria Cuba Friendship Ophthalmological Hospital, in El Oued, Algeria, between May 2018 and May 2019.
Materials and methods:
a cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study was performed. The universe was formed by 1 978 patients who attended the pre-surgery consultation. The analyzed variables were: age, gender, clinical diagnosis and pre-surgery ophthalmological diagnosis.
Results:
a large part of the patients treated with chronic non-communicable diseases were over 45 years of age and male. Cases with arterial hypertension and ischemic heart disease prevailed.
Conclusions:
arterial hypertension, ischemic heart disease and diabetes mellitus were the most commonly found diseases. The most frequent pre-surgery ophthalmological diagnosis were senile cataract, retina diseases and neo-vascular glaucoma.
