ALVAREZ MARTINEZ, Lilian; MARTINEZ MARTINEZ, Zulema y MORALES HECTOR, Flora. Behavior of English language reading comprehension in imaging professionals in Villa Clara. Rev EDUMECENTRO [online]. 2013, vol.5, n.3, pp. 55-68. ISSN 2077-2874.
Background: knowledge of the English language is essential for the professional development of health workers, among others reasons, because most of the scientific information concerning medical sciences in Internet is in English. Methods: a descriptive retrospective study was conducted at the Faculty of Health Technology in Villa Clara in order to assess English language reading comprehension skills in Health Technology graduates in the field of imaging. The study deals with theoretical and methodological fundamentals of communicative teaching and reading comprehension skills in English for Specific Purposes for these professionals. It applies the dialectical-materialist method, uses purposive sampling, and is supported by a range of investigative methods and techniques. Results: the main difficulties were linked to the insufficient preparation of graduates for the development of this skill and a lack of scientific and technical vocabulary for their performance. This problem is due to the fact that the textbooks and exercises intended for reading lessons do not meet the interests and needs of imaging professionals. Although they acknowledge the importance of reading, there is a lack of motivation and interest in its development. Conclusions: the results of the assessment showed a low level of English language reading comprehension in imaging professionals at the upgrading intermediate English course.
