Resumen
HERNANDEZ CASTRO, Junior. The forbidden truth: rock in Cuba as subculture and counterculture (1960-2010). ARCIC [online]. 2023, vol.12, n.32, pp. 282-301. Epub 01-Ago-2023. ISSN 2411-9970.
As a cultural manifestation associated with rebellion and breaking with what is established and politically correct, rock music has been object of prejudice, censorship and misunderstanding. At the same time, it stands as a space for the construction of identities for those who consume it on a regular basis, which has led them to develop a series of cultural traits and patterns that are not always accepted by the dominant culture.
In this context, the purpose of this article is to describe the evolution of the subcultural and countercultural character of rock music in Cuba during the period 1960-2010, in whose extremes rest the strictest censorship and official recognition. Through the bibliographic review and the evaluations of experts and protagonists, it is possible to identify contextual elements that can contribute to a better understanding of the phenomenon of subcultures and countercultures in Cuba, and, consequently, to the application of more inclusive and more democratic cultural policies.
