Thirty environmental strains of Salmonella sp., maintained as secondary reference strains in the Microbial Culture Collection of the National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology of Cuba, were studied in order to verify their viability and phenotypic characteristics after preservation in semisolid media since 1980. Of these strains, 96,7% were found viable, showing a survival of more than 12 years with good viability levels (106-108 ufc/mL) and 95,2% of their physiological properties preserved. This media allowed the preservation of Salmonella sp. strains with good results, suggesting its use as a simple method in laboratories with limited resources.
