Resumen

ELIAS MONTES, Yelenis et al. Risk factors of urinary tract infection in infants. General Milanés Pediatric Hospital. 2016. Multimed [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.2, pp. 266-279. ISSN 1028-4818.

Introduction:

urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the main causes of morbidity in pediatric patients worldwide.

Objective:

to identify the risk factors that were associated with urinary tract infection in infants at the "General Milanés" Pediatric Hospital, from January 1 to December 31, 2016.

Method:

an observational, analytical, case and control study was carried out. Fifty cases and 150 controls were selected with a ratio of 3 controls per case.

Results:

in the univariate analysis age (OR = 0.9818, CI = 0.4689-2.0554, p = 0.8884) and sex (OR = 0.9762, CI = 0.4446-2.1435) p = 0.8874) were not related to the risk of urinary tract infection. The binary logistic regression showed that malnutrition (OR = 4,584, CI = 1,598-9,191, p = 0,035); immunodeficiency (OR = 3.191, CI = 1.071-7.302, p = 0.027); the malformations (OR = 1.259, CI = 0.607-5.339, p = 0.027); toilet techniques (OR = 15,886, CI = 7,148-55,315, p = 0.005); and the use of disposable diapers (OR = 9,000, CI = 5,000-31,062, p = 0.036) constituted factors of independent influence.

Conclusions:

age and sex were not risk factors. The technique of cleanliness, the use of disposable diapers and malnutrition were the factors of greatest risk. It is concluded that with the values of the binary logistic regression model, the risk of suffering from this disease can be estimated.
