RODRIGUEZ VARGAS, Malvin et al. Psychological disorders of burnt patients while staying in hospital. ccm [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.4, pp. 1142-1155.  Epub 01-Dic-2019. ISSN 1560-4381.

Introduction:

burned patients suffer from psychological disorders. In Cuba, however, published studies on this subject are scarce.

Objective:

to describe the psychological disorders of burned patients when they are in hospital.

Methods:

between May 2014 and October 2016, a longitudinal study of 46 burned patients was carried out at the Caumatology and Reconstructive Surgery Service of Vladimir Ilich Lenin Hospital in Holguin, Cuba. It was done in five periods (first one: 1-7 days, second one: 8-14 days, third one: 15-21 days, fourth one:> 21 days and the fifth one:> 45 days). The psychological disorders were the study variable. The results were processed in the MedCalc statistical package, with the absolute and relative frequencies and the Odds Ratio (OR) with their confidence intervals (95% CI).

Results:

anxiety, sadness and sleep disorders were predominant in the five evaluated periods. Anxiety was reached by 80%; sadness, by 89% and sleep disorders, by 85%; these were the highest percentage values in the first period. Personal Pathological Backgrounds (PPB) were decisive as a risk factor for showing anxiety (OR = 3.37; 95% CI = 1.40-8.11) and sadness (OR = 3.55; 95% CI = 1.49 -8.42), also in the first period.

Conclusions:

anxiety, sadness and sleep disorders were predominant in the evaluation periods. Personal pathological backgrounds constitute a risk factor to show anxiety and sadness.
