Background:
Heart disease in pregnancy is considered the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality due to non-obstetric causes. In Cuba, maternal follow-up is prioritized.
Objective:
To describe the behavior of heart diseases associated with pregnancy in patients who attended the Provincial Consultation of Heart Disease and Pregnancy at the General Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital of Sancti Spíritus from September 2015 to September 2016.
Methodology:
An observational, descriptive and prospective study was conducted in 119 patients who attended the clinic for heart disease and pregnancy.
Results:
The age range that prevailed was between 16 and 25 years, congenital heart diseases prevailed in 75 %, being the valvulopathies the most frequent ones and within these the prolapse of the mitral valve. 49.6 % of pregnant women presented a murmur as a reason for consulting. The electrocardiogram and the normal echocardiogram were the most frequent findings, representing the 56.3% and 74.8 % respectively.
Conclusions:
Low prevalence of heart disease was observed during pregnancy with a predominance of congenital heart diseases in its light forms.
