Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory systemic disorder affecting medium and large arteries and is a major cause of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality. Although multiple closely related factors are involved in atherogenesis, lipids and lipoproteins play a predominant role. In this review, conducted in the PubMed/Medline, SciELO and Clinical Key databases with the descriptors atherosclerosis and lipids, the role of low density lipoproteins, high density lipoproteins, cholesterol and triglycerides is highlighted. Finally, some examples of their application in medical practice are given.
