Introduction:
The development of virulence of SARS CoV-2 has a very close relationship with diabetes mellitus. Objective: To characterize the diabetic patients infected with COVID-19, admitted to the OGR hospital.
Methods:
A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe of study was the totality of patients admitted to the Hospital for COVID-19, OGR. The sample was 38 patients admitted with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.
Results:
The predominant sex was male, with 55%, and the age group was from 71 to 80 years, with 36.8%. The most frequent comorbidities were high blood pressure with 100%, chronic kidney disease, with 73.7%, obesity, with 76.3%, ischemic heart disease, with 63.1%, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with 44, 7%, ICTUS with 21%, and neoplasms with 15.8%. Insulin was used in 63.1% of cases, metformin in 50%, and DPP-4 inhibitors in 34.2% of treated patients. Steroids were prescribed in 100% of cases. The presence of severe pneumonia was observed in 65.8% of patients, oxygen desaturation in 39.5%. 34.2% of the studied patients showed psychological stress, dietary transgressions occurred in 31.6% of the cases.
Decompensated patients predominated, with 65.8% of cases on admission. 71% of patients improved the respiratory symptoms, as blood glucose levels were compensated.
Conclusions:
Male patients between 71 and 80 years were the most affected. High blood pressure was the most frequent comorbidity. 71% of patients improved respiratory symptoms, as blood glucose levels were compensated.
