BLANCO RODRIGUEZ, Haydee et al. Evaluation of 20 % guava tincture in treating episiorrhapies. Rev Cubana Farm [online]. 2013, vol.47, n.2, pp. 264-271. ISSN 0034-7515.

Introduction: popularity of medicinal and aromatic plants has considerably risen in the last few years because of the use of herb medicines. Objective: To evaluate the guava 20 % tincture as antiseptic to cure episiorrhaphies and to compare its effectiveness with that of the 0.5% iodized alcohol. Methods: a prospective, longitudinal, experimental case-control research study was conducted. The universe of study was made of all the puerperal patients cared for by "27 de Noviembre" hospital from 2005 to 2010, amounting to 2 691. The selected sample was n1= 300 cases treated with 20 % guava tincture and they were compared with the control group n2= 600 treated with 0.5 % iodized alcohol. The simple percentage method and the Square chi statistic of 95 % interval confidence were employed. Results: those patients treated with 20 % guava tincture satisfactorily recovered in 98.66% of cases whereas just 1.34 % got infected. In the group of patients treated with 0.5 % iodized alcohol, 3.5 % were infected. The average cicatrization time after using 20 % guava tincture was 8-9 days. Conclusions: With the use of 20 % guava tincture, the puerperal women without suture sepsis prevailed; their level of cicatrization was adequate and significantly exceeded the results of the 0.5 % iodized alcohol.
