ESQUIVEL LAUZURIQUE, Mercedes y RUBEN QUESADA, Mercedes. Identificación precoz y manejo inicial de adolescentes con sobrepeso. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2001, vol.73, n.3, pp. 165-172. ISSN 1561-3119.
The overweight in the adolescent may predict high risk for health and an increase of mortality in the adult life. A series of suggestions for the diagnosis and initial managment of this entity are made in this paper. 4 aspects are analyzed here to this end: a) Selection of the best indicator, b) Selection of reference values, c) Definition of the limits of normality and d) Establishment of criteria for the evaluation and initial management of cases. It is concluded that the body mass index for age offers better results than the weight for the height in the detection of adolescents with a high level of adiposity. The need of using the national standards is also explained. The 90th percentile is recommended as a higher limit of normality and some procedures are proposed to be part of the peventive examinations of adolescents.
