JIMENEZ-PEREZ, Marianni de la Caridad; GONGORA-VALDES, Javier; CABALLERO-CRUZ, Geidy  y  ZAYAS-FUNDORA, Enmanuel. Scientific Production on Pediatrics Published in Cuban Student Scientific Journals. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2023, vol.95  Epub 01-Mar-2023. ISSN 1561-3119.

Introduction:

The student scientific activity in medical science careers has experienced in the last years a greater growth; paired with this arises the need to watch over its improvement and one way to do it is to introduce bibliometrics as an effective tool to evaluate the scientific activity in the different areas.

Objective:

To evaluate the scientific production on pediatrics published in Cuban student scientific journals.

Methods:

bibliometric, observational, descriptive study of articles published in 11 Cuban student scientific journals related to the specialty of pediatrics, in the period from January 2017 to August 2021. The study universe consisted of 107 published articles.

Results:

In the student scientific journals as a whole, multiple authorship represented 75.4% and only 2.8% of the authors were foreigners. The outstanding topics were: social and pedagogical classes, congenital malformations and psychology. Of the published articles, 52.8% were original, 17 received citations and the average number of references was 15.51. The journal Universidad Médica Pinareña had the highest number of articles published with 29.

Conclusions:

Student scientific production on articles linked to pediatric sciences published in student journals is high, however, deficiencies are shown in indicators such as publication of articles in other languages, articles of foreign authorship, explanatory studies, of greater complexity than descriptive ones, international collaboration and citation of articles in other scientific media.
