A descriptive and prospective study of those malnourished pregnant women who delivered during 1994 was conducted at the Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital of Matanzas. The total casuistics was of 108 studie patients and their data were processed in a Fox Base database, and later computerized in an IB micro at the Institute of Sports Medicine, in Matanzas. Through the Statgraph statistical package it was possible the finding of the mean as a central measure of dispersion, the analysis of variables correlation where R is the critical value of 0,1946, the % method, and the application of X₂ with a signification value to 0,05. Among the studied variables affecting the newborn's weight we found a statistically significant parity, which exert a negative influence on the weight of the pregnant woman, and the bad smoking habit. We found a very important dependence relationship (reliability of 95 %) on studying the significance of maternal weight gain in relation to the newborn. Better results were obtained when this gain was of 12 kg.
