Resumen

MARTINEZ CAMILO, Rodolfo Valentín. Behaviour of breast cancer in the climateric period. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3062.

Breast cancer is the first cause of death in Cuba due to malignant neoplasia in women, of which 1 600 new cases are diagnosed every year. The development of public health in Cuba has contributed to the creation of the climaterium and menopause medical service for multidisciplinary care of woman where the diagnosis of breast cancer at early stages can be made, which will favour a conservative treatment and improve the quality of life of the women. A retrospective study was carried out in the teaching gynaecological and obstetric hospital of Guanabacoa municipality from 1993 to 2005. The sample was made up of 103 patients suffering from breast cancer in the climacteric period; the used variables served for the results and the working analysis. The predominant age group was 45-59 years. The risk factors that mostly affected women were few deliveries and breastfeeding for a short period of time. The main clinical stages were I and II. The histological variety that prevailed was infiltrating ductal carcinoma. The fundamental treatment was the surgical-conservative one, with a survival rate of 5 years approximately. The early diagnosis favours surgical-conservative treatment of the affected woman, thus contributing to the improvement of her quality of life.
