Resumen

LUGONES BOTELL, Miguel  y  RAMIREZ BERMUDEZ, Marieta. The social and cultural aspects: Their importance for the middle-aged woman. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2008, vol.34, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3062.

Considerations are made on the historical and social role placed by women in the society along the years. At present, the simultaneous functions of women in the family and the society are recognized, since they are daughters, mothers, wives, grandmothers, care givers, etc. They are also affected by biological changes characteristic of their age, and they are part of families expanded with members of various generations, in addition to their social responsibilities, mainly in the working sphere, that make them support a load different from that of other age groups, and to specific susceptibilities associated with their biology. It is stressed that the processes of organism-environment relation interact in a systemic way and that their unbalance influences on the biological processes. That's why, the living conditions and the environment are determinants of the health-disease process, which should be taken into account in this stage. Observations are made on how the middle-aged women have been considered through time and it is emphasised that climacteric women require an integral assessment that allow to go deep into the setting they develop their activities, due to the fact that the gender overload increases the perception of climacteric symptoms and the appearance of some diseases that have a direct impact on their quality of life.

Palabras clave : Climacteric; menopause; culture and society.
