CALERO, Jorge Luis; VAZQUEZ, Juan Carlos  y  DOMINGUEZ, Emma. Sexual behaviors and syndrome recognition of the sexually transmitted infections (STI) in Cuban students of Art and Sports schools. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2010, vol.36, n.3, pp. 382-398. ISSN 1561-3062.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the sexual behaviors and the syndrome recognition that with relation to sexually transmitted diseases (STD) have the students (women and men) aged 15 to 19 of Arts and Sports National Schools. METHODS: A descriptive study was conducted including a probabilistic survey to 1 203 adolescents (boys and girls) after the creation of 8 focal groups (FG). These FG were taped, transcribed and analyzed to correspond with the qualitative methodology. The questionnaire responses were analyzed with the help of SPSS 11.5 software and descriptive statistics in addition to the Chi2 test to determine the level of association among variables. RESULTS: The 72 % (866) had sexual intercourses (SIC) at a mean age at onset of 14.6 ± 1.5 years. From those initiated, the 93.0 % (756) refered its protection in all the SIC. Although the 93.8 % says to know on STD, only the 32.2 % recognized some symptom and or sign of STD; the 42.9 % mentioned some consequence of the STD for women and the 36.2 % for men. Sonly the 18.0 % knows on the risks of becomes infected with a STD just as is showed in FG, where the adolescents show the lowest perception of it. CONCLUSIONS: Regardless of that most of the interviewed refer to apply the protection in SICs, the negative arguments centered in relation to this method, we must to think that such frequencies be lower than to be expected. The low level of information of adolescents on signs and symptoms of a STD become them vulnerable of infection and don't seek the help of a specialist.
