The current increase in pregnancy at a advanced age is a major risk for women during gestation provoked among other factors by a high incidence of pre-existing diseases. OBJECTIVES: to identify the main demographic and obstetric features of advanced age pregnants, to determine the major causes of maternal morbidity in the age group and to compare them with a control group. METHODS :A analytical and retrospective study was performed of cases and controls on pregnancy risks of pregnants aged 35 or more of " Falcón" Polyclinic from January, 1 to January, 2005 and the December 31, 2007. Control group included a randomized sample of pregnants aged 20-35. Statistical tests and risk analysis were applied. RESULTS: Smoking was present in 71.43 % of pregnants of advanced age and also a predominance of excess weight (42.86 %) and obesity (38.09 %). In study group chronic high blood pressure and gestational hypertensive disorders were present in the 57.14 % and the 42,86%, respectively. Chronic high blood pressure and preterm labor threat (p = 0.021) has statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: The body excess weight, smoking, high blood pressure and preterm labor threat were more frequent in study group.
