A bibliographic review of the antibiotic prophylaxis in Surgery and Orthopedics was made. Its physiological basis, the principles on which its indications are based, advantages, most common errors, mode of use and selection of the drug to be administered at present were also included. Recommendations were made for its correct utilization according to the most frequent germs aimed at minimizing the adverse effects and treatment costs. It is proved that reducing or preventing the infection of the surgical wounds gives a peculiar importance to the method in modern surgery and that's why its systematic use is indispensable.
