Books production in Cuba is highly acknowledged within the Revolution's cultural policy framework, for it is considered a leading support of the educational programs and the formation of a critical reader, a goal pursuant with the aims of building a socialist society. In a domestic context, characterized by transformation in economic activity and organization, the production of goods and cultural services -books, among them- should also transform themselves, regarding the principles associated with the updating process of the Cuban economic model. Cuban publishing industry, greatly subsidized by the Cuban State, needs to operate with higher levels of rationality and efficiency in its productive and distribution processes. Beginning with a brief recount of Cuban publishing industry development, the present article characterizes its present performance and identifies the leading difficulties preventing a better economic development.
