Resumen

MOLINA DIAZ, Elda. The Biotechnology Financing in the World. Alternatives for Cuba. Econ. y Desarrollo [online]. 2023, vol.167, n.1  Epub 10-Mar-2023. ISSN 0252-8584.

Biotech is a very important sector for the society and the economy, but is an extremely risky for investors. It needs significant capital volumes, the investments require long maturing periods and results are uncertain. Thus, funding is limited and complex. In Cuba, this sector achieved a relevant development in the 90, becoming an important source of revenue, but currently it is confronting a serious challenge because of the lack of financing. This piece summarizes the main mechanisms used to finance this sector in the world, in order to identify those more feasible for Cuba´s biotechnology. In this sense, Venture Capital is considered a valid option, although its possible negative implications should be taken into account. In parallel, other traditional and novel financing alternatives should be promoted.

Palabras clave : alliances and collaborations; venture capital; crowdfunding; exchange-traded funds; mergers and acquisitions.
