A retrospective study of the results of the determination of the lupus anticoagulant (LA) carried out from July 2000 to July 2004 at the hemostasis laboratory of the Institute of Hematology and Immunology, was conducted. During this period, the determination of LA was performed in 380 samples. 86 % of them were from females. There was 7.3 % of global positivity. The time of Russell's diluted snake poison was the test that detected more positive cases (50 %). It was evidenced the need to carry out more than a test to identify all the positive cases. The prevalence of LA behaved as follows: 17.8 % in the systemic lupus erythematosus, 21 % in the autoimmune hemolytic anemia, 7.6% in the idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, 3.5 % in a group of miscellanea that include mainly arthralgia, vasculitis, Evan-Fischer's syndrome, partial prolonged time of thromboplastin, bleedings and recurrent infections. 7.6 % in patients with thrombosis, and 4.6 % in patients with various abortions and/or fetal losses. Its determination in autoimmune diseases is very important, since 39 % of the positive cases corresponded to this group, although its positivity was low in the group of women with abortions and/or repeated fetal losses and in patients with thrombosis.
