CAMPS CALZADILLA, Esmir; GAMEZ FONSECA, Mercedes; BORROTO, Mailin y PRADO MARTINEZ, Consuelo. Nutritional evaluation of Cuban centenaries and its relation to biomarkers of aging. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2013, vol.32, n.1, pp. 57-64. ISSN 0864-0300.
At present, the elderly population in Cuba reaches the 17,8 % and has a life expectancy of about 78,6 years. This increase, added to the fact that birth cohort reduction implies a narrowing of the base of the population pyramid and a widening of the peak where the group of people over the age of 100 increases, before the evidence that this group of successful aging constituted, led to a national study which was aimed at evaluating the nutritional profile of the Cuban centenaries existing until January 2008 and their relation to biomarkers of aging. To estimate the nutritional state, anthropometric measurements were performed which allowed to calculate the body mass index and the Mini Nutritional Assessment was applied which determined biomarkers of aging in muscle strength and biochemical indicators. The results obtained showed that there is a positive correlation between the biomarkers found and the nutritional state of the centenaries.
