Drepanocytic anemia is one of the commonest hereditary haemolytic alterations in Cuba, and, as such, it is considered as a public health problem. A cross-sectional and descriptive study on hemoglobinopathies was conducted among the 1 439 pregnant women in the municipality of Santiago de Cuba during the first semester of 1996. A sample of 297 women was taken from them. The results showed some type of haemolytic alteration for an incidence of the disease of 20.6 %, which was high compared with the one reported in other papers. The age groups with highest frequencies were related to the most fertile periods in women, that is, from 20 to 24 and from 25 to 29 years old, although there were 69 adolescents in the series. The most numerous districts were 1 and 3 due to their population characteristics. The 265 husbands that were examined lived in these districts, and 44 couples at risk were found among them. Of the prenatal diagnoses, 3 proved to be hemoglobinopathy SS, but it was possible the induction of abortion in time thanks to the prevention and guidance work carried out in these cases.
