An strategic evaluation study was conducted to make a functional evaluation of the elderly in "Mella" home for the aged located in Mella municipality, Santiago de Cuba province, from October to December, 1999. The universe of study consisted of 26 older people living in this place. Data were taken from a functional evaluation model for institutionalized older adult, with the following results: 3.8% of the elderly were classified in Level I and 62.9% in Level II; besides, 96.1% were able to do their daily activities. The higher degree of dependence in carrying out activities was observed in telephone calling, craftmanship work, shopping and housekeeping. It is necessary to create a higher level of independence and autonomy for the older adult.
