A descriptive and longitudinal study of the suicide behavior in "Calixto García" Hospital, province of Holguín, during 1988, was conducted by analyzing the death certificates and the models of compulsory declaration diseases from the Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology and from the Municipal Department of Statistics. It was concluded that attempted suicide predominated among those aged 15-24 and that it was more frequent among females (2:1). The most used method was drug ingestion. As to suicides, hanging prevailed among males; whereas the ingestion of organophosphates was the most used suicide method among females. These methods are considered as "hard" and highly lethal.
