CAMPILLO ACOSTA, Damarys; BERDASQUERA CORCHO, Denis  y  CORONADO MESTRE, Ramón. Mortality associated with the metabolic syndrome. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2007, vol.23, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3038.

A cross-sectional study of 149 patients admitted in the intensive therapy service of “Dr. Carlos J. Finlay” hospital from January 1st to February 28, 2005, was conducted aimed at determining the association beetween the metabolic syndrome and the main causes of death. To this end, the Student's t test was applied with a confidence interval of 95 %. The values of p < 0.05 were considered significant. The general mortality rate and the specific rates by causes were calculated. There were 88 deaths for a rate of 59.1 %. The main causes of death were: bacterial bronchopneumonia (23.8 %), acute lung thromboembolism (15.1 %), and hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease (CVD, 12.5 %). January was the month in which it was observed the highest percentage of dead patients with metabolic syndrome (41.1 %). It was present in 100 % of those who died of cardiogenic shock, mesenteric thrombosis and decompensated diabetes mellitus, in 63.6 % of the dead as a result of hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease, and in 62.5 % of the patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease. It was proved an association between metabolic syndrome and cardiogenic shock, hemorrhagic CVD, ischemic CVD, bacterial bronchopneumonia, septic shock and mesenteric thrombosis, all of them with values of p < 0.05. The study proved that the metabolic syndrome is a health problem, and that's why it is necessary the implementation of intervention strategies in primary health care in order to prevent it.

Palabras clave : Metabolic syndrome; mortality; risk factors.
