ALVAREZ VALDES, Neiza; GALVEZ CABRERA, Elisa  y  DIAZ GARRIDO, Dayamí. Smoking in adolescence at a community level. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2007, vol.23, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3038.

Considering adolescence like the more susceptible stage to develop addiction, and washing an increment of smoker adolescents in health area, we propose to characterize smoking in adolescent seen in Basic Work Group of “Marcio Manduley” Polyclinic in 2006, by means of a descriptive and transversal study made in 402 adolescent aged between 11 y 14, fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria. We used the main instrument, World Survey on Nicotinism in Youth (GYTS 2001), where adolescents are classified as smokers and non-smokers, it is estimated a prevalence of 14.2 % of smokers, with a predominance of male sex and aged 13. Purchase of drug (cigarette) in shops or street sellers, and its consumption in homes. It was obvious a high rate of challenge to environmental tobacco smoke as well a high rate of family members smokers of pupils. Active smokers are classified in most of them in low physical dependent, and with a high motivation to abandon smoking. We conclude that smoking in adolescence is a high prevalence health problem in study population that is why it is necessary a active social and community involvement considering that integral care to adolescent is a critical link in equilibrium of community health.
